What is the scholarship for?

The literature scholarship is aimed at supporting the translation of books and other cultural works from Italian into Swedish or from Swedish into Italian. The scholarship may cover the costs of translation and, where appropriate, other associated costs such as illustration or printing.

Who can apply?

The applicant is typically the individual who performs the work, e.g. the translator. If multiple people perform different kinds of work (e.g. translation and illustration), multiple applications should be submitted for the same book.

When the book is to be published by a not-for-profit organisation, the organisation may apply directly and must specify which individuals will perform the work.

What is the scholarship amount?

The scholarship amount is between 5,000 SEK and 50,000 SEK.

How do I apply?

Before applying, you will need to:

  • Describe the work to be performed (and by whom, if the applicant is an institution)

  • Specify the cost items in the budget

  • Describe how the publication contributes to the cultural exchange between Sweden and Italy (max 1500 characters)

You submit your application via the online application system by clicking the link at the top of the page (the application form will open in a new window and will require registration).

The call is open each year from September to October.

How is my application evaluated?

Applications are examined by a committee consisting of representatives from the Italian Cultural Institute, Swedish Institute, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, Stockholm School of Economics, and Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.

What happens after I apply?

After you have submitted your application, we will send you a confirmation that it has been received.

Decisions for each application are made in December each year, and applicants are notified before the end of the year.

What happens if I am awarded a scholarship?

You will receive a letter with the details of the next steps to take.

If you accept the scholarship, we require that the front matter of the publication contains one of the following:

“Med bidrag från Stiftelsen C.M. Lerici”
or: “The publication has been funded with a contribution from the C.M. Lerici Foundation”
or: “La pubblicazione è stata realizzata con il contributo della Fondazione C.M. Lerici”

We will ask you to send us a few physical copies of the publication so that we can verify that the above acknowledgement is included. We will pay out the scholarship upon successful verification.

The scholarship is withdrawn if it is not claimed within 24 months of the decision date.

By accepting the scholarship, the applicant also authorises the publication of their name in the list of beneficiaries.
